Ensign 1 debuts in glory

Growing up in Kilburn, England, singer Ensign 1 said her father encouraged her and her siblings to follow in his musical footsteps, but it was not until recently that she took the plunge.

"Lord I Give You Glory", her first song, is scheduled for release on January 27. It is produced by George "Brotha George" Wright.

"It's a contemporary worship song. I literally woke up singing this song; the words were inspired by the Lord," said Ensign 1.

She was directed in the studio by Brotha George, a prolific gospel artist who has established himself in South Florida and the tri-state area.

Born Tanya Dawkins in Kilburn, Ensign 1's parents are Jamaican. Her father, George Dawkins, was a member of Misty in Roots, a pioneer British roots-reggae band.

"They always had jam sessions at our house and he would sing to us. I was always mimicking him," she recalled.

An ordained minister, Ensign 1 has been pastor of the True Gospel Apostolic Tabernacle Church in Mount Vernon, New York for eight years.

"Lord I Give You Glory" is projected as one of the songs from an album by Ensign 1, to be produced by Brotha George.
