Elihu Morris has enjoyed comfort for most of his life, but there was a time when things were not rosy. He empathizes with the downtrodden on “Any Little Man”, his latest song.
Co-produced by Andrew Bassie Records and his Shamalki Roots Production, it was released in August.
“There was a time when I saw it (poverty) around in my youth but never really new what it was about. Just knew that I was living like a sheltered kid, and living in the ghetto I felt more fortunate and did realize that my folks were self-employed hardworking people, who were driven to be their own boss,” said Boston-based Morris.
He added that the concept for “Any Little Man” played in his mind before he came up with suitable lyrics and final arrangement.
Morris then sought Andrew “Bassie” Campbell --- a veteran musician who has worked with several high-profile artists such as Junior Reid --- to enhance the song’s sound.
“This was inspired by a key, an idea with a few lines from everyday life experience, and transform into lyrics which overtime become a complete song,” Morris explained.
Morris and Campbell have collaborated on previous productions including
“How You Cold So”, which came out in 2018.
Originally from the working-class community of Craig Town in Kingston, Jamaica, Morris is an unapologetic “reality artist”. Influenced by Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson and Ken Boothe, his songs include “God of Israel”, “Got to be Me” and “What A Love”.
