Derrick Scott goes virtual

The fifth staging of singer Derrick Scott’s Gospel Mission show will be held virtually on November 29. Though he is used to performing in front of a packed house at Unity New Testament Church of God in Fort Lauderdale, Scott is looking forward to the new setting.

“We’re going to be doing it in a fully fortified studio; no audience, no band. When I do my shows it’s a full production, no half and half thing,” he said. “The important thing is, the people get the message.”

Scott launched Gospel Mission in 2015 at the church he has held fellowship for several years. It marked the launch of “Preacher Nowadays”, his first album.

The response was so positive he decided to stage it annually.

“People in the congregation were saying, ‘boy, yuh haffi continue this. It improve every year, ‘cause I learn and the people keep learning,” he said.

Scott’s fourth album, Mission Ablaze Live, was released last November. It was recorded during the third Gospel Mission at Unity New Testament Church of God.

From the rural market town of Linstead in St. Catherine parish, Jamaica, Scott is the younger brother of Freddie McKay, a singer best known for “Dance Dis ya Festival”, which won the Festival Song Contest in Jamaica in 1976.

He started his career as a sound system artist in the 1980s, but after migrating to South Florida in the 1990s, he converted to Christianity and has released a number of songs and four albums.
