Cruz says no to Sexual Harassment

Anthony Cruz tackles the sensitive topic of workplace assault with “Sexual Harassment”, his latest song, which is produced by Stingray Records out of the United Kingdom.

The singer says he was inspired to write and record the song after a female friend related a disturbing incident to him recently.

“She said, ‘yuh know sey mi boss kiss mi on mi neck an’ it mek mi feel uncomfortable’. Mi ask har if shi confront him but I don’t think she really want to do dat,” Cruz related. “I don’t know if she’s afraid of losing her job.”

Known for songs like “Half Way Tree” and “You Got it Bad”, Cruz has heard of similar incidents. He believes women are afraid of reporting their stories because they are concerned their bosses may dismiss them.

As an artist, he thinks it is his duty to address a problem that has been around for decades.

“Wi a di voice of di people an’ wi have to get di message across through music,” said Cruz.

Though the term was first used in 2006, what became the #MeToo Movement took flight in late 2017 with multiple allegations of rape and sexual victimization by actresses against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Other high-profile female celebrities reported incidents of workplace harassment which resulted in film and record companies taking action against their former bosses.

According to Anthony Cruz, it is unfortunate such repercussions have not reached Jamaica.

“A lotta women going through these things but don’t say anything because they don’t want to lose dem work,” he said.
