All strung out with Sons of Mystro

The sibling violin duo known as Sons of Mystro are back with a second album, “Reggae Strings Vol. 2”, which like its predecessor, is produced by Danny Breakenridge of Upstairs Music.

The 12-song set was released in March. It hears brothers Malcolm and Umoja putting their viola/reggae touches on standards like Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City”, Bob Andy’s “Too Experienced”, and “Cry me A River”, originally done by Barbadian singer Jackie Opel.

Umoja, at 25 years-old, is three years younger than Malcolm. He says they have improved musically since their first album, “Reggae Strings Vol. 1”, which was released by Upstairs Music in 2014.

“I feel we have grown a substantial amount. We now have a sound that can easily be identified even amongst other violinists and musicians,” he said.

Credit, Umoja added, goes to their father Handel McNeish for their knowledge of classic reggae songs like “Too Experienced”.

“Thankfully, we have the guidance of our father, Daddy Mystro, who was pivotal in our perspective and song selection when it came to reggae music.  Most songs we were definitely familiar with, which allowed us to be able to make the right approaches musically,” he explained.

Malcolm and Umoja McNeish were born in South Florida. Their father is Jamaican and their mother is from Barbados.
