Seven years after Mikey Spice soared to number one on reggae charts with a ‘reggaefied’ version of Neil Diamond’s “I Am…I Said”, Tad’s International Record is scheduled to release an album based on the rhythm that made the song popular.
“Reggae Virus 1st Dose” is the compilation set’s title. It has 14 songs including the Mikey Spice track which he co-produced with (the late) Lloyd “Joe Fraser” Campbell.
Release date is June 25.
The other songs by Sanchez (“Love is Blind”), Glen Washington (“Captured”), Wayne Wade (“He Messed Up”), Little Hero (“God is Amazing”), Mykal Roze (“Today”) and Sophia Squire “Cant’ be Too Much Love”), among others, are co-produced by Tad Dawkins Jr. and Andre Lee.
According to a statement from Tad’s International Record, “Both producers thought it would be a good idea to put out an album with the same ‘riddim’ with different artists to complement the Mikey Spice track.”
“I Am…I Said” was a massive hit in 1971 for Diamond who has a loyal following in Jamaica. Forty-three years later, Mikey Spice teamed with Campbell for a laid-back rendition that made reggae charts in Jamaica, the United States and United Kingdom.
The team at Tad’s International Record recently added a new flavor to the track and assembled an elite cast of artists to voice songs for the first installment of “Reggae Virus 1st Dose”.
