Anthony Cruz goes nostalgic and spiritual on "Jah Cruz Medley" and "Oh Lord", two of his latest songs.
The singer co-produced both singles with Tad Dawkins and they were actually released last year. He is renewing the campaign to get them heard.
"Jah Cruz Medley" is a combination of Freddie Jackson's "Rock me Tonight", LTD's "Love Ballad", "Rocksteady" by Alton Ellis and Billy Stewart's "Sitting in The Park". They are done to the Rocksteady rhythm which was done at Studio One in the mid-1960s.
"These are some longtime classics wey mi grow up hear mi family a listen. Dem chune ya show sey man can love woman an' woman can love man. Dem really show how intimate a man an' woman can be," said Cruz.
"Oh Lord" hears him in a different mode, giving praise to a Supreme being. He said the track is indiscriminate, and appeals to persons whether they profess Christianity, Rastafari or Allah.
A nephew of Garnet Silk, Anthony Cruz is from Manchester in central Jamaica. He has been singing professionally since the late 1990s, and believes it is critical for the vocalist to maintain a presence in contemporary dancehall.
"Psalm 87 (verse seven) tell yuh dat 'singers an' players of instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee'. Anytime yuh tek di singer dem outa di music business, a pure devil thing tek over," he said.
