J Written works in Payne Land

Singer/songwriter J Written returned to his hometown in Kingston, Jamaica recently to film the video for ‘Work to Do’, one of the songs from ‘Kaleidescope’, his album which was released in 2024.

The visual was done in Tavares Gardens, a working-class housing scheme commonly known as Payne Land. It is a hop and skip from Trench Town, the fabled neighborhood where Bob Marley once lived.

Making the video in Payne Land fulfilled a promise J Written made to his sister, Telesha, who died in 2024. Directed by Tattyana Atkinson, it shows fans the community that inspired many of his songs.

“I wanted to show the world where the fire that's blazing in my soul originally started, which inspired me to begin this mission. Payne Land taught me the importance of family and I've brought that with me on my journey,” said J Written.

‘Kaleidoscope’, his debut album, was released in June, 2024 by Tafari Music, a company owned by Gary “Dr Dread” Himelfarb, the veteran music industry executive. Himelfarb is the founder of RAS Records, an all-reggae label that was based in Washington DC and worked with roots-reggae acts such as Bunny Wailer, Culture and Israel Vibration.

‘Kaleidescope’ is the first major project for Tafari Music.
