New Mexico-based music producer Alphonso “King Shark” Henclewood’s latest project is ‘Strictly The Best Roots & Culture’, a compilation album featuring old school deejays like Lone Ranger and Captain Barkey.
The 13-song set was released on April 18 by his Montego Records.
“These are songs I had for a long time, and I jus’ felt it was the right time to put dem out. Is some good songs by some good artist an’ they should be heard,” said Henclewood.
Most of the songs were recorded at Dynamic Sounds in Kingston, Jamaica during the 1990s. Charlie Chaplin, Double Ugly, U Mike and Pretty Rebel are some of the other artists on ‘Strictly The Best Roots & Culture’.
Henclewood first met Captain Barkey in Greenwich Farm, the Kingston community where both spent much of their formative years. The deejay — who was murdered in New York City in October, 2012 at age 50 — contributes ‘Gwan Like You Wicked’ and ‘Forward’ to the album.
Many of Henclewood’s projects are homage to Greenwich Farm, a reggae hot spot during the 1970s. In 2024, he released four albums — ‘Welcome to Greenwich Town’, ‘Instrumentals To The Fullest’, ‘Roots And Culture Sound Clash’ and ‘Green Farm All Stars’.
