Delawness blends art, music and fashion

The marriage of art and pop culture is nothing new. It's a union that was profitable throughout the 20th Century and continues today.

Jamaican graphic designer Lawrence L. Deacon has embraced different forms through his Delawness brand. Recently, he launched Introspeq, a concept that promotes his ideas using music, art and fashion.

Introspeq, a pop song by singer Yasi B, is part of his campaign. It was released in early December.

However, it is an abstract painting by 25 year-old Deacon that is the project's driving force.

According to Deacon, "Introspeq is a symbol of self-discovery, emotions, relationships, and understanding who you are as an individual. As you discover yourself in this chaotic world, it’s very important to ask yourself these questions daily."

He added that, "Introspeq Collector’s Edition is the celebration of art, fashion and music. Innovation through the arts, picture, and sound geared towards urban culture."

The Montego Bay-based Deacon took six months to complete the project, his most ambitious since his Waves exhibition in that city just over one year ago.

That expose was also a blend of design and music.

After doing two semesters at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Deacon launched Delawness in 2015. He credits aggressive initiative for getting his work out to corporate Jamaica companies and artists like Grammy winner Koffee and roots star Chronixx, for whom he has designed logos and posters.

With Introspeq, he hopes to show the  power of the art, music and fashion trinity.

"I think that most people don't notice, but art, music and fashion work hand in hand and as such I wanted to bring my art to my audience through the three mediums. Ever since I have started my brand, my vision was to bring all three together under one roof," he explained. "It's like creating a portal that interconnects all three to transform each to function cohesively. People who love fashion will find the music, and people who are into art will find the fashion. It works hand in hand like a marriage is supposed to be."

Some of Deacon's biggest creative influences are corporate designer Paul Rand, American movie poster designer Saul Bass and Milton Glaser, who designed album jackets for Bob Dylan and did art work for DC Comics.
